The Major Aspects, Explained
An aspect is an angle between two planets in your birth chart, measured around the zodiac circle. Some angles create harmony; others create friction. Both kinds matter. Aspects show you where energy flows easily and where you need to pay attention.
An orb is the range of degrees within which an aspect still counts as active. CosmyDay's calculator uses specific orbs for each aspect type—shown in the table—so you get consistent, reliable results when you look up your chart.

Hard and soft aspects
Astrologers sort aspects into two groups. Soft aspects—the sextile and trine—feel permissive and natural. Hard aspects—the square and opposition—bring tension and demand your engagement. The conjunction can go either way depending on which planets meet. None is better or worse. Soft aspects let you coast; hard aspects make you grow. You need both to become whole.
Applying and separating
An applying aspect is still tightening—the planets are moving closer to the exact angle. A separating aspect is loosening—they've passed the exact angle and are drifting apart. Applying aspects feel more active and urgent. Separating aspects are fading but still present. Both show up in your chart and shape how you work. The closer to exact, the stronger the pull.
Reading an aspect in your chart
Find the two planets involved and notice what they represent—your needs, drives, gifts, wounds. The aspect type tells you the relationship between them. A trine between Venus and Mars, for example, means your desire and your drive work together smoothly. A square between the same planets means you're learning to balance what you want with how you go after it. Use the keyword and feel to understand what's happening.
