How eclipses work

An eclipse is a new moon or full moon that happens near a lunar node — one of the two points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the plane of the ecliptic. Because that tilt is about 5°, most lunations miss alignment entirely. When one lands close enough to a node, the shadows connect: a new moon near a node becomes a solar eclipse, a full moon near a node becomes a lunar eclipse. This is why eclipses arrive in pairs or triples during eclipse seasons about six months apart.

Astrologically, eclipses are read as accelerated turning points rather than ordinary lunations, and their effect is tied to the degree they fall on. Why does an eclipse only happen at certain new and full moons?

The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5° to the ecliptic, so at most new and full moons the three bodies are not quite aligned. Eclipses occur only when a new or full moon falls close to a lunar node — the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic plane. That alignment recurs in eclipse seasons roughly every six months.

What is the difference between a total, annular and partial eclipse?

In a total solar eclipse the Moon fully covers the Sun's disc. In an annular eclipse the Moon is near apogee and appears slightly too small, leaving a ring of sunlight. A partial eclipse covers only part of the disc. Lunar eclipses run total, partial, or penumbral — the last being a faint shading that is easy to miss.

Not necessarily. The times on this page are the moment of maximum eclipse globally, in US Eastern Time — not local visibility. A total solar eclipse is only total along a narrow track a few hundred kilometres wide, while lunar eclipses are visible from wherever the Moon is above the horizon at the time.
