The 12 Houses of the Birth Chart
The 12 houses of your birth chart are the stage where planetary energy plays out. Each house rules a different area of life—from how you present yourself to how you rest, from money to marriage to your public role. Think of them as the 'where' of astrology: a planet's sign tells you its flavor, but its house tells you where that flavor shows up in your actual life.
Your houses are set by your exact birth time and place. The houses divide your chart into 12 sections based on where the sun was in the sky at your birth moment. This is why birth time matters: even a difference of a few minutes shifts your houses. When a planet lands in a house, that's where you'll experience its energy most directly.

Angular, succedent, cadent
Houses fall into three groups by strength. Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the most powerful—they're where planets show up boldly in your life. Succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) are medium strength; planets here work steadily behind the scenes. Cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are the gentlest; planets here are more subtle, more about learning and reflection. A planet in an angular house hits harder than the same planet in a cadent one.
Empty houses
Not every house has a planet in it, and that's completely normal. An empty house doesn't mean that area of life is neglected or weak. It simply means you handle that life area more independently, without a planet's direct push. You may actually be more flexible there. Look to the natural ruler of that house (shown in the table) to understand how its energy still flows through your chart.
How to read your own
Start with your sun, moon, and rising sign placements by house—these show your core self-expression, inner world, and outer presence. Then scan for any other planets and note their houses. A planet in house 7 (partnership) will color how you relate; the same planet in house 11 (community) will color how you friend. Read each planet's house as a location, not a prediction. You're looking for where your energy naturally concentrates.
